How does doula support work?
Wondering what the process looks like from hiring a doula through support during childbirth? We start by getting to know each other. You can submit the contact me form and we'll set up a time talk on the phone. These consultations are meant to answer your basic questions and for us to begin to get to know each other. The initial call usually lasts 15- 30 min.
Anytime is the right time to hire a doula, but starting the process at 20 weeks helps you to get the most out of the service. When you are ready to move forward with doula support, we'll sign a contract and set up your prenatal meetings. Once you've signed on, I am available to you via call, text and email whenever you need to talk.
I usually schedule prenatal meetings between 30 and 36 weeks. During our meetings, we'll get to know each other and build mutual trust. We'll start to illuminate your vision for your birth experience. We'll discuss your hopes and concerns, your birth plan, birth choices, and comfort measures.
It's go time.
Now, imagine you are near the end of your pregnancy and having some sensations that make you wonder if you're in labor. Who do you call? Your doula. I'm trained to explain what might be going on and answer your questions. I'll give you the information you need about what to do next and when to call your provider.
Now, contractions intensify and you're putting your comfort techniques to use, but you're ready for some additional support. I meet you wherever you are and stick by your side for the duration. I'll be hands on when it helps. I'll suggest ways your partner can support you. I'll remind you of your plan and your wishes. I'll make sure you feel safe, supported, and confident. I will remind you that you are a rockstar.
You did it!
When baby arrives, I'll help you get cleaned up and comfortable. I will assist with that first latch if you choose to breastfeed. When you're ready for quiet bonding time and have everything you need, I will take my leave. Then, I'll come for a postpartum visit to support you in the adjustment to life with your new bundle.
You're home.
Everyone is adjusting to life with baby. Maybe you need someone to talk to - to process what's going on. You may be feeling overwhelmed and need a hand figuring out the intricacies of caring for your baby. Maybe you need someone to hold the baby while you take a shower or a nap. I visit you in your home twice after baby is born. I'll make sure you've eaten, slept, and bathed. I will make sure that your concerns are heard and offer suggestions and resources. If you are interested in having a little extra support, I am available for additional postpartum hours for my birth clients.
